Spring in the Moosehead Lake Region

Spring in the Moosehead Lake Region

Spring is a wonderful time in the Moosehead Lake Region. Warmer temperatures in the extended forecast have us thinking it is finally on its way here.  Some people consider the end of April and month of May a dreary time of year, full of mud and not much to do. Well, I’m here to tell you that that is the furthest thing from the truth.  Early spring in the Moosehead Lake Region is full of fun family activities!

Spring is one of the best times of the year for a moose safari. As the snow melts the moose come out of their winter hiding spots and come back to the edges of the dirt roads and bogs in search of fresh forage. Not sure where the good areas to find these majestic animals are? No worries, we have experienced Maine Guides on staff who can customize a tour to perfectly fit you and your family! Don’t forget your camera at home; the chances of seeing deer, rabbits, and all kinds of other wildlife are also high!

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably having some cabin fever right now and are dying to bust the rods out and catch some fish! As the ice on Moosehead and area lakes and ponds recedes and water temperatures rise your chances of catching some of the biggest fish of the year are here. Usually around mid-April we start seeing the smelt runs in the area. Smelt are a plentiful baitfish that spawn in tributaries and are absolute candy to brook trout, lake trout, and salmon. Fishing the smelt runs can be some of the most fast-paced and exciting fishing of the year! Imagine yourself standing on the shore of a remote brook trout pond. The sun is setting, air is still, and the only noise is the quiet rushing of water in the small brook next to you. As the last of the sun dips below the tree line you break out your headlamp and patiently await the feeding frenzy. Within minutes after dark the stream is black with smelts, swimming upstream safely away from the lake. The mouth of the brook is a different story. Trying to disturb as little water as possible you drop your streamer ten feet in front of the huge fin you just saw circle over the sandbar. Strip…Strip…Strip…WHAM! You’ve fooled the sizeable brookie into thinking your fly was an injured smelt and the fight is on. Now go ahead and try to tell me that doesn’t sound fun?

Here at Wilsons we go by the saying of ‘Work Hard, Play Harder’. While the outdoor opportunities are plentiful this time of year, it is also time to get ready for another busy summer! Spring-cleaning is in full swing, scrubbing every surface spotless in preparation for your visit. Nothing beats a clean cabin! In the last few years we have also really been putting a smack down on the remodeling side of things. Last year we tore apart the downstairs ‘lodge room’ and one of the upstairs bedrooms in Ski Lodge and hung beautiful new pine. This year we are tackling the upstairs hallway and other bedroom, along with some other secret projects! Follow us on Facebook for all the up-to-date progress pictures and let us know what you think!

2017 is going to be the best summer yet and we are ready for it! See you all soon!
