Spring isn’t here quite yet!

Winter is still here at Moosehead! Yesterday may have been the first day of spring but you’d never know it looking out the office window here. March is by far my favorite winter month to get out and enjoy some ice fishing or riding. Spring-like temps and longer days make for the perfect recipe for an enjoyable day outside! For the most part the cold blustery days spent huddled in shacking half hoping you didn’t have any flags so you wouldn’t have to go outside are over. This time of the year is much more conducive to sitting on the ice in lawn chairs with a group of your friends laughing the day away.

Although they may be an ugly fish, March has some amazing fishing for cusk. Cusk are usually only caught at night, when they move into the shallows to feed but in the month of March they spawn in shallow sandy-bottomed coves and offer some of the fastest action of the year.  Don’t be fooled by the face only a mother could love, they’re meat is deliciously flakey white meat that makes the best chowder! Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen though; it can get very bright out there with the snow reflection!

Riding conditions were getting a little spotty after the warm-up a few weeks ago but not to worry, last weeks storm brought 12-18 inches of fresh snow to the region on top of a hard packed base. Groomers have still been out in full force and the trails are awesome!

Just yesterday Scott, Alison, Colby, and 10 other friends ventured up to Chesuncook Lake for lunch! Scott reported the ride up the lake being a little bumpy with drifts but Chesuncook having absolutely flat, fast, and amazing trails. Don’t pack your sleds away quite yet; we’ve still got more riding to do!
